For When You’re in a Creative Rut

On the shore of Lake Superior

You can’t use up creativity.  The more you use, the more you have.  I have that Maya Angelou quote hanging on the wall in view of my desk.

Because it happens to all of us, that fear of never creating anything awesome again.  It can be paralyzing.

What do I do when I’m not feeling very creative?  I go outside and immerse myself in nature, that always works.  Sometimes I journal, or even stay at the computer and type (that’s what I’m doing right now) and the ideas eventually form.

Challenging yourself to do something even slightly different from your comfort zone is good. Getting together with a friend to create (or go arting) is also a quick (and fun!) fix. Mentoring someone who is just getting into your craft can be a huge inspiration, it makes you remember why you started down that path in the first place.  You don’t even have to mentor someone, just have a conversation with a beginner.  Their enthusiasm will be enough.

Remembering that every creative feels this way at some point is also a big comfort.
