Hey friends, I think it’s safe to say that most of us like to take photos, right? But I also realize that most people don’t actually want to learn photography, what they want is a few easy tips to take better photos. So I’m starting this monthly series to help you with that, whether you have an SLR, a point and shoot camera, or even a smartphone.
I see a lot of promising landscape and outdoor portrait shots that would make beautiful, engaging photographs except for one thing: the horizon is completely uneven.
It’s a huge distraction – I think it’s because our brains want to fix it and can’t really focus on the image itself. Have you ever noticed this before in your own work, or in the work of others? Next time you’re out shooting, be mindful of the horizon (especially when you’re photographing water), it will make for a much more compelling photo. I promise!
Need help keeping things straight? Most tripods have a level (or you can purchase a level that fits in the hot shoe of your SLR camera and some point and shoot cameras). Digital cameras have grids that you can choose to display on your LCD screen, and smartphones do too. Or you can adjust and crop after the shoot in your image editing program.
This was the first thing you hit me with, so long ago! Thanks!
