While at the airport on our way to Baja, my friend was at the ticket counter asking a question. The airline employee asked where he was headed and he told her he was flying to Cabo. A man standing nearby scoffed and said, “Cabo. Must be nice.” In a condescending tone, as if an all-expense paid trip was just handed to my friend.
I’ve heard this kind of reaction several times before. And at the risk of sounding defensive, I thought I’d write a blog post about it.
Matt and I love to travel. So do many of our friends. We love exploring new cities, trying authentic food, and seeing how other people live. We love the adventure. And it’s also when I take the bulk of my photographs.
We chose to have a lifestyle that is conducive to travel. We choose to save our money specifically for this purpose. In addition to striving to live within our means (and avoiding buying the latest toys), we do small, daily things that contribute to the cause – we rarely eat out, we bring our lunches to work every day, our house is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. We work for it.
As we go through life, we are faced with lots of choices. Yes, some things are completely out of our control and many decisions are made for us and we have to learn to roll with that. But there are so many things that we are completely in control of and the choices we make really do affect the outcome.
As far as I know, we only have this one life. There is some seriously scary shit happening everywhere in the world and I don’t think it’s going to stop. So I’m going to enjoy the hell out of my life now because we truly don’t know what the future will bring.
So yeah, our trip to Cabo was nice:
How about you? Are you living your life to the fullest? If not, what steps can you take right now to start living your dreams? I’ve got a ways to go myself, but life is a work in progress, right? You might as well be having fun.
